The El Vizcaíno Whale Sanctuary is the world’s most important refuge for protecting the gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus).
During winter, this species migrates to the western coast and coastal lagoons of Baja California Sur—especially the El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve.
These lagoons serve as key breeding and calving areas, essential and delicate phases of their life cycle. Gray whales were heavily hunted during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, pushing them close to extinction.
Today, they are among the most recognized whale species due to their tendency to migrate near the coast, allowing thousands of people each year to observe them up close. Their migration spans from the Baja California peninsula all the way to the Arctic Ocean and back to the warm lagoons of Baja for reproduction.
